How Do Companies Process Video Interview Content?

I have to do a video interview (HireVue) in the next few days and I'm curious about the process once I've completed the interview & submitted my answers - e.g. if there's 15 questions with 3 minutes max per question, that would mean a max 45min video would be sent, and if there's say 10 candidates, is someone going to watch 7.5hrs of candidate content? And who is watching this content - hiring managers, assistants, HR? Company size = approx 12000 employees.

The advantage to the company of doing a video interview is that there is no requirement that anyone actually watch all of it, which saves oodles of time. You watch until you can reject the candidate. Candidates that aren't ruled out by the end move on to the next stage. I imagine a great many candidates can be ruled out almost immediately, after one or maybe two questions. If you interviewed them in person, you would be socially obligated to sit there and interact with them for a full hour.

In my group, it's the hiring manager and a few other people directly involved in the hiring decision. Sometimes we get in a room and watch them together but usually we watch separately whenever we can squeeze in some time. HR doesn't care and we don't share the videos outside of the hiring group.

Each question is a separate segment so the person watching might skip around to the questions they care about the most. Some people watch everything but most stop watching as soon as they've made a decision. I think ours are about seven questions and most can be answered pretty well in about two minutes so it doesn't take that much time to get through them.

Some unsolicited tips:
  • Staging helps. Make sure the lighting is good, the room is quiet, and whatever is behind you isn't distracting. If you can, raise your laptop so the camera isn't pointing up at you.
  • Have pen and paper nearby. You should have enough time to write down some thoughts that you can refer to if you lose your train of thought in the middle of your answer.
  • If you misspeak or say something stupid, don't panic; correct it if you need to or just move on. We know it's a weird, unsettling format and we generally allow for some bobbles as long as you can make your way to a satisfying answer.

Response by poster: Thank you both for your answers. To close this question out, it turned out that I wasn't actually asked to do a video interview. The email from the company said, "we would like you to participate in a digital interview, powered by HireVue", and there was a button in the email which read, "Practice or Interview", but when I pressed that button I was taken to a HireVue page and asked 6 sequential questions, 3000 words max, no time limit. I'm guessing it was a (somewhat cruel) test to weed folks out.
