They didn't cover this in D.A.R.E.

Just walked by a couple people in my local park who looked like they were shooting up (bummer). It involved a needle and covering their faces with their respective shirts. I of course minded my own business but I walked away really curious about what exactly they were doing.

When I walked by the girl was covering her face with her shirt (like up over her nose), and the guy was holding a needle. When I looked back a minute later, he had his shirt over his face (in the same way), and I didn't see the needle so thought maybe he was doing something with it underneath his shirt.

What might have they been doing? Is shooting heroin (or some other substance) up your nose a thing? I understand that those deep in the throes of addiction often have to find unusual places on their body to shoot up, but these actually looked like high school kids and not people that had been using for years.

I do not do drugs so this is purely a curiosity question (and I guess I just like to be informed about the kinds of stuff going on in my neighborhood, especially since this a park I walk my dog in daily and plan on taking my future children to). I accept that parks are often a place that people do drugs and like I said, I didn't say anything or interfere.

My first guess is that they're pulling up their shirts so that the sleeve puts compression on their arm, and helps them find a vein to shoot up in.

Any chance they were hiding their faces from you?

My, uh, friend smoe says that smoking meth or crack can be really fun with shooting heroin. You kinda nod then smoke and perk up, then kinda nod again. If it was a little windy it can be hard to heat up the pipe because the flame blows away from it. Both kinds of pipes are small, so they would fit under your shirt, particularly if you look down at the same time.

Also, it makes it easier to overdose, so don't try this at home kids.

Yeah, I'd assume they were just lighting a pipe under their shirts.

There are places you can inject on your torso/that would be exposed by pulling your shirt up. (I'm not sure how the needle would be getting to the face if she has the cloth over her face and he's got the needle, but maybe I'm not picturing it correctly.)

Either way, shooting up is already putting you into a harder-core group. Most people will take drugs orally, sniff them, or smoke them before they go to the IV administration routes, which require more equipment and a modest amount of technical skill. So these high-school kids were already in a pretty bad way.

When you say "needle" did you see a syringe or just the pointy bit? If it was only a metal pin, that could have been a "nail" to hold THC wax for dabbing, with the shirt over their face to keep the vapor from blowing away before they could inhale it (or blowing out the lighter, as poe said).
