The Violin? The Violin Teacher?

What was the name of this black and white photo book / film about a child and a violin?

I remember as a kid ('70s / '80s) we had a book with black and white photos in it. I think later I discovered it was stills from a short film or TV show, but we only had the book with photos.

Images I remember:

It was about a child who was given a violin, by an older man.
The child learns to play the violin.
At some point the violin gets crushed - I think a sibling of the child, falls on it?
The older man then gives the child his violin and, I think, then rows off in a dinghy. I think the rowboat is full of stuff from their life, including things like a bird cage?

I have tried googling, with no luck.

Are you by any chance thinking of an adaptation of the story by O Henry of The Gift of the Magi? Sorry, can't link on my phone but I also vaguely remember seeing this and that is what googling the bits I remember gives me.

Response by poster: I love that story, but unfortunately that's not it.
