Gmail is spontaneously deleting individual emails from threads

I am getting the same message described here and can retrieve the messages once I see that notice but the problem is... I didn't delete anything.

It's deleting both emails I've sent and replies from people, but only in longer chains. The same messages are missing in both web-based Gmail and the app. I discovered this behaviour this week when:

a) I was sure a client had failed to send me revisions which I later found after finally noticing the deleted messages notice undeleting them;

b) I couldn't find a document I had sent her -- Sent Items showed an email she sent me in the morning as the last email in that thread, but "undeleting" revealed the email I sent back to her in the afternoon.

I ALREADY can't remember shit because I'm 46, and this is making me doubt my sanity on the daily. Why is Gmail spontaneously deleting stuff and how for the love of God do I make it stop?

Check the filters you have in place - do you have any filter that is automatically trashing things? And could that filter be accidentally catching things it shouldn't?

Do you have the new version of the app? I just got it rolled to me today and noticed it acting hinky. You got me checking my deleted or trash continuously now. (A good thing. Thank you.) It could be something to do with the new app.

I second checking filters. And - an incredibly paranoid solution that I hope is incorrect - it sounds a bit suspicious that the emails you describe were deleted and I'd worry about a coworker trying to sabotage you. Consider changing your password, turning on 2-step verification if you haven't already, and checking other logins to your account.

Who knows why the fuck this week's iteration of Gmail does anything?

how for the love of God do I make it stop?
