Texting screenshots on iPhone XR

Simply put, I got this new phone and I can’t do it any more. Why?
Recently I got an iPhone XR (upgrading from a 6s). Previously, I could take a screenshot and then immediately text it by clicking on the inset that pops up when you take a screenshot. I could also mail it, add it to Notes, post it on Facebook or Twitter, etc.
When I switched to the new iPhone, the option to send via text is suddenly missing. I can still do all the other things, but the Messages app is not on my list of options. It is also not listed under ‘More’ out to the right.
I have iMessages turned off, and also had it turned off on my previous phone. Googling this issue has not been successful.
Any ideas?

Response by poster: @This_Will_Be_Good: that’s what I was trying to allude to in my second-to-last paragraph.
Apparently I do have to have iMessages on, which is strange - was on the same version of iOS on my 6s and didn’t have it turned on, but this worked fine there.
I had turned iMessage off years ago because i wasn’t getting group texts at all when it was on at the time. I’ll give it another whirl and hopefully I won’t have that issue. Thanks everyone!

I have an Android and group texts with my friends with iPhones and iMessages enabled often don't work properly. Most of my friends have moved to Whatsapp with/for me (I'm the only Android user I know) so we can text seamlessly as a group, which is super annoying.
