Any ideas on record stores in London?

In March I'm gonna be headed to Europe for the first time. Very exciting! Most of the time is going to be split between London and a small town in Bavaria where my wife's family is. I've looked online and seeing as how London is quite large there are very many record stores. Where should I go??

I won't have the time or desire to visit many of these. So I'd like to know if anyone here can narrow down where I might try hitting up. I'm into metal, hardcore punk, loud bands, strange and dark electronic stuff, 80s goth/new wave/punk. I don't have or buy cds, only records and tapes. It seems that if you can find the store that has a lot of metal records, then the rest of the stuff I like is usually there too. "Oh you like 90s French black metal? Then you are probably interested in this Sad Lovers and Giants comp. lp and these Cold Meat Industry albums over here. Also, here are a bunch of Vatican Shadow and Schloss Tegal 12"s."

Any tips anybody has is greatly appreciated. The massive numbers of record stores I've seen while internet searching has me overwhelmed!

Camden Town for All Ages and general Camden Town-ness. East End for Rough Trade East on Brick Lane (more general selection) and Crypt of the Wizard up Hackney Road.

(And you'll find a lot of metal/punkers in Garlic & Shots in Soho.)

Response by poster: Killer. Thanks, Holgate. Crypt of the Wizard is the type of spot I'm looking for. Same with Rough Trade and All Ages. Thank you!

Berwick Street used to be a row of wonderful record stores in Soho. Now it's down to Reckless Records and Sister Ray. There are more record stores around Soho but they tend to be focused on servicing DJs (Sounds of the Universe is good for a quick browse though). It's definitely worth a good wander around the area - for the food as much as the stores - but try and avoid the queues of the clothes horses around Supreme and Palace Skateboards.

Vinylhub if you're interested in what's around every corner (because holy shit, there's a lot of record stores in London). There's also the option to search the site. For example, "metal" in England gets you down to 38 results. There are some short descriptions of the stores, which is how most of these are matches, because the site search covers record store names and descriptions. Some shops have comments, or you could cross-reference with reviews from other sites.

I like that site better than Record Stores.love, which has a similar map but less details about the shops.

Response by poster: Humuhumu, thanks. More great suggestions. I apprectiate it.

Filthy Light Thief. I totally spaced out on Vinylhub. I've never really used that site before. Thanks. I'll dig a little there closer to vacation time!
