the other woman

I am looking for media on, about, for the other woman.

I am looking for any writing, pop culture depictions, or notes about being the other woman. Poems are good. Books are good. TV shows are good. The point of view of, or something sympathetic to, the other woman are what I'm looking for. Maybe the French have written something?

Things I have so far:
- Grey's Anatomy season 1
- "Does He Love You?", Rilo Kiley

It’s a Woody Allen film and he’s a terrible human being, but Crimes and Misdemeanors has an amazing performance by Angelica Huston in this context. It’s dark and upsetting but particularly interesting as a look at cultural ideas about infidelity.

I'm just realizing somebody might look at my suggestion and think I'm straight washing a queer song if they're not familiar with Okkervil River's oeuvre--while it's certainly possible to interpret Maine Island Lovers through a queer context, Will Sheff frequently inhabits woman characters in his lyrics and singing, who are also usually placed in a heterosexual context, which is why I've always interpreted Maine Island Lovers as being from the "other woman" and not the "other (possibly closeted) man".

The other man By sloan.

Not the other woman but from the perspective of the other X.

I don't have fiction suggestions, but a good look at "other perspectives on infidelity around the world" is a book by a Wall Street Journal reporter Pamela Druckerman, called Lust In Translation

- The Invisible Woman
- When a Woman Ascends the Stairs

The following suggestions feature the protagonist(s) as 'the other woman' not as the main storyline but as major subplots:

- Book 3 and 4 of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan series, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child. (Also these books won't make sense if you don't read the first two books first. Which everyone should definitely do.)
- Oh Lucy!
- Frantz (depending on audience interpretation)
- Maggie's Plan

Katherine Heiny’s “Single, Carefree, Mellow” is a set of vignettes/short stories about relationships, and many of these involve being the other woman. Everyone in the book is messy and complicated and human; it’s quite good.

  • Why do you come here
When you know I've got troubles enough?
    Why do you call me
When you know I can't answer the phone?
Make me lie, when I don't want to
And make someone else some kind of an unknowin' fool
You make me stare, when I should not
Are you so strong or is all the weakness in me?
