Make messages not pop up on Facebook?

I always have www.facebook.com/messages/t/name open in Chrome. Prior to a recent system update from Dell for my Inspiron 15, all the messages stayed there. But now, when I'm on www.facebook.com every message I receive is suddenly popping up from the bottom of my screen. They weren't before.

I have Googled til my fingers went numb trying to find out how to make them stop. Everything I'm finding is outdated. I give up, and turn to you for help. How do I stop the message pop-ups while I'm scrolling through my news feed?

This may be a facebook issue. I have had a number of recent but not active messages popping up repeatedly.

You can block notifications from Chrome
