number blocked on I-Phone

Asking for a friend (no, seriously). My friend has an Galaxy S9 and her son has an i-Phone. When she calls his number, it goes directly to his voicemail. When he tries to text her, it won't even let him send the text. (I think she says it turns red).

She says she checked his phone to make sure he didn't block her number and says that it isn't blocked. This also happens with one other person (who also has an Android phone). I've tried Google but can't seem to find a solution and I just don't know i-Phones well enough (I'm an Android guy).

Any idea what's going on here? Is there some way that he may have (accidentally?) blocked her number but it wouldn't be easily visible? If her number is blocked, would that prevent him from sending her texts?

A few Interoperability problems between Android and iPhone are known issues. Did your friend recently switch from iPhone to Android? There is an issue that can crop up if she did not turn off iMessage on the old phone before switching.

There are also some helpful suggestions here.

I used to have that happen with some, but I don't think all, phone numbers. It included my boss's number, which was a problem. What had happened in my case is that I (or possibly my toddler son) had set the Do Not Disturb mode on. Here's an article about it.
