Uvula, I hardly knew ya.

I’m 10 days post-tonsillectomy, and am generally recovering well. However, my uvula is still pretty swollen, and I’m not sure if I should be concerned.

I’m 10 days out from my adult tonsillectomy. It sucked, but I seem to generally be past the really sucky part. I’m off the heavy duty pain meds, and am alternating Tylenol and Advil throughout the day. The pain has abated enough that I can eat solid, though still soft, foods.

Immediately following surgery, my uvula was very swollen. I was told this is a normal side effect, which my thorough googling has confirmed. What I can’t find a good answer for is the expected duration for the swelling. It has definitely decreased over my recovery, but it is still so enlarged that it hangs down on the back of my tongue (a very unpleasant sensation).

My question is, is this normal? I have my post-op check up next week, 3 weeks after my surgery. I can (and probably will) call my doctors office tomorrow to pose this question, but given the holidays, I wanted to check if I need be concerned.

Obligatory

and- yes, I'd say you should definitely bring it up because you just never know.

Best answer: I had my tonsils out last February! Best decision ever.

I wasn't back to unswollenness for about a full two weeks. I think I was about 85% by the time I returned to work 2.5 weeks after my surgery. You definitely should call and ask if you feel concerned. I did not feel concerned so I waited until my two week post-surgery appointment. I was full 100% normal again about four weeks after the surgery.

I'd also recommend just recovering well and even though you're eating mushy soft solid foods, also keep up the popsicles, teas, and soup broths, too.

Response by poster: Thanks folks! I called the doc this morning and they said it’s totally normal for it to be swollen 2-3 weeks post surgery.

My apologies - I meant to link the clip to a skit where Gilda says, "It'll behoove ya to take care of your uvula" which was not this one! I think I got the wrong video.

It should have been a clip of this sketch: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101009114144AAfAL5t

As for me, I immediately thought of this. (But more importantly, speedy recovery, bluloo!)
