What is it like to be a casting director?

What goes into being a casting director? What does their day look like?

I assume that casting directors would almost exclusively be based out of New York / LA, but I have no idea what goes into the job.

Do they give feedback? Do they physically sit in the same room as the actors trying out for roles or do they just review tapes later? Are they the ones that follow up with the actors that got the roles?

What kind of information do they receive initially when they're trying to cast a part? How long in advance do they start casting?

I love learning about the entertainment industry and would love to hear personal stories or anecdotes. Thanks!

If you're at all interested in podcasts the second episode of The Good Place Podcast features the casting directors for that show, and it's pretty damn interesting! But there are spoilers for The Good Place (all of seasons one and two, even though it's only the second episode of the podcast).

Also this episode of the podcast Making the Sausage talks about casting from the perspective of a casting assistant and two actors.

This New Yorker profile of Allison Jones (who cast The Good Place and is in the podcast, but has also done as much to change comedy as anyone) has a few vignettes about her process.
