Recommend me a good new scare

Partner and child away this weekend, so what I really want to do is scare myself with a good film from the last three years (2015 onwards). I'm going to get IT and Get Out, so what are some other recent films that might fit the bill? I have UK Netflix too if there are any good picks on there.

The Wailing is a fabulous recent Korean horror on Neflix. (And if you have amazon prime in the UK, try Train to Busan if you want an excellent zombie flick (also Korean)).

Korean cinema does not skimp on the gore, btw, or in putting children in traumatic experiences so while you may not need a gore warning if you're asking for scare / horror recs, you may for the whole children in peril thing.

The Haunting of Hill House is long - 8 episodes I think. We started in the afternoon for one long glorious binge going no, we'll stop at the next one and pick it up tomorrow, and then it was 2 am and we were on the couch weeping and screaming.

Veronica on Netflix was a fun watch. The Conjuring 2 is also a good horror film IMO especially for a sequel. I keep hearing the Haunting of Hill House (series not movie) on Netflix is also very good.

Soooo... that's a recommendation?

Hereditary is one of the most-talked about and well-reviewed of the genre of late.

Is Sorry To Bother You obtainable yet? It's satire but also fits under horror pretty well.

Looks like both The Babadook and It Follows came out in 2014, so don't meet your requirements, but if you haven't seen those, I would make the effort.

I got around to watching The Girl with all the gifts last week and was blown away by how good it is. I can’t tell you much about it except that it’s a horror movie and the cat dies. But if you can watch it without spoilers and are into post-apocalyptic horror, I highly recommend it.

Another vote for The Witch. It's so good.

So, I don't scare real easy, and it's more the real life type of scares that get me (the Handmaid's Tale, for instance, or Rosemary's Baby without the devil worship) more than the supernatural stuff. So sort of along that vein I'll also rec...

It Comes At Night and The Cured are both within the last year or two, and I enjoyed them much more than I would have thought.

Oh man. If you haven't seen Mark Duplass' "Creep" and "Creep 2", respectively, you really have to rectify that as soon as possible.

I wish I had never seen them just so that I could watch them for the first time again.

Andrew Traucki's pair of tourism-promotion films Black Water and The Reef are good value if waiting for terrified humans to discover their own place in the local food chain is your kind of scary. Both were released well before your earliest cutoff date, but did relatively small box office so there's a good chance you haven't already seen them.

Little ms. flabdablet (13) rated both of these as "totally not scary, what were you even on about, Dad", but she's Built Tough For Australian Conditions; they gave me the howling fantods.

Oh yes, I would also give a hearty second to It Comes At Night.

Seconding Hereditary! Probably the most unsettling movie I've seen this year. Deeply upsetting, but in a good way? If that makes any sense.

I've only seen the first episode, but Haunting of Hill House was surprisingly solid as well.

Hereditary and The Witch are musts!

I also recommend The Babadook, if you haven't seen it yet.

I found "The Beyond" fascinating and creepy, though possibly not as directly scary as you want.

I finished Haunting of Hill House last night, and absolutely loved it. Brilliant story telling - but definitely rewards attention (don't multi-screen).

We also finished THoHH last night. Not only is it sad and scary, it wants the biggest screen you can put it on because there is shit happening in the shadows in the background too. We're going to have to do a whole rewatch now that I've seen some screenshots confirming I wasn't imagining them.

In addition to the recommendations for Creep, Hereditary and The Witch, which I heartily agree with, I would also recommend They Look Like People. Seriously underrated picture imo.

I don't scare easily but found the villain in the first season of Jessica Jones to be legitimately scary.

The Witch is sooooo good...

If you want to be afraid you'll have nightmares, my partner and I were so unnerved by Mother! that we had to stay up and watch something else before we went to sleep.

Hell House LLC was recommended to me last year, and it's still one of my favorites. It's found footage style, which isn't normally my cup of tea, but this one got me.

Response by poster: A great set of answers, thanks everyone! So far I've watched It, Haunting of Hill House, Hereditary and 10 Cloverfield Lane which have all been right on target. A quick trip to the shop for more DVDs (oh, for a Blockbuster!) is in order and then back to it!

Both of these are very good, yet genre-bending in their own ways. Both on Netflix streaming.

This is a little outside your time frame, but if you haven't already seen it, You're Next is one of my favorite relatively recent horror movies. It is a home invasion horror movie, but beyond that, the less you know about it going in, the better.

Also, if you're down for trippy, experimental, 80s-inspired horror full of cults, demon bikers, and Nicolas Cage, I can't recommend Mandy heartily enough.
