Name this band

What was the name of an early 1990s band that were vegetarian, feminist, pacifist etc etc? I think it was kind of rap music and they had one song about periods.

If that's too easy, does anyone know what they're up to now?

Best answer: Yeastie Girls?

Jeez, there were a lot of them, but maybe Bikini Kill? They were punk, not rap, although Kathleen Hannah went on to do some more electronic stuff.

Response by poster: I've confused two things together. That Yeastie Girls song was the one I was thinking of [thanks kcm] but it's not the band I'm trying to find...their album had audience members on stage talking into the microphone and I think the cover had the American flag on it.

Yeastie Girls did the famous "Go Down" track that made your eleven o clock news. It was my first thought, but it might be wrong.

Trivia: that track was produced by Jack Dangers, of Meat Beat Manifesto fame.

Best answer: OK that didn't take too long and turns out that I wasn't that confused - the Yeastie Girls song "You Suck" is on Consolidated's album "Play More Music". Now if anyone knows what they're up to....

On Preview: Thanks YSSTOG

Le Tigre?

Hmmm... never mind, I think they were later than early 90s.

Consolidated is still going strong-ish, I play Dropped and the others once in awhile. Perhaps you're also thinking of Butyric Acid (and all 2,284 remixes)?

(mostly about RU486 and individal rights, etc.)

Best answer: Mark Pistel and Adam Serbourne were the two most vocal members (third original member was Philip Steir). Pistel left in the mid/late 90s and the group went to shit. Pistel worked a bit with MBM and released one solo album as Pistel. He also worked with The Disposable Heroes of Hip Hoprisy, which is best known for fostering the ... whatshisface... um... Franti. Michael Franti (aka Spearhead and previously with the Beatnigs). What any of these people (besides Spearhead, who released an album 2 years back) have been up to this decade is beyond me. (Imo, Franti blows, but one of the DHoH tracks (Drug of a Nation) is cool.)

If you want to pick up a Consolidated album, I'd recommend Friendly Fascism.

on preview: kcm, still going strong? They haven't put out an album in like 8 years! (But yes, "RU486?" "Yes, I am sir!" is a great lyric.)

Nice bit of trivia: Sloan have a (accurate) lyric that goes "Can I think Consolidated's okay? It's not the band I hate, it's their fans."

The End of Meaning is from 2001, I suppose I figured that was in the same decade and relatively 'going strong' :) .. I stand corrected.

I remember hearing a band called the Stirelles on LA's KROQ in the early 90's that had a song called "I'm on the Rag"---more punk, though.

I hate you!
I hate me!
I'm on the raaag!

I stand corrected. Never seen or even heard of that album. Looks like, according to Allmusic, it was self-released in 2000. Also, Pistel's not credited so I assume he didn't come back after Business of Punisment.

Response by poster: Free Music or Stockpiled Death was a free downloadable album released in 2003...

meech, do you have that album? I looked at consolidatedmusic.org and it ain't there. If you do, could you possibly send it to me as it was a free download anyway? I'd like to hear it.

Northern State? More than the early 90s but the album has people and maybe a flag.

Response by poster: Sorry, YSSTOG, I just found it by googling. But did come across this interesting guy that sounds like he would help out.

Not from the 1990s, but if you want feminists rapping (well, shouting) about menstruation, you could do worse than checking out Pulsallama's excellent percussive No Wave-ish song, On The Rag. (I think Ann Magnusson was a member, but I may have made that up in my head?)

Damn, Consolidated. That takes me back. Wow.
