so i'm looking to buy a flag to wave around during a pride parade here - my question then, is, what flag pole or whatever do i buy for this thing, so i can comfortably wave it around during the parade? i'm in canada, and stuff i can get from amazon.ca is preferred.

Thin wooden dowel from the hardware store or craft store? Some hardware stores will cut a length to size. Whittle a notch with a pen knife and tie it on, the notches will keep it from sliding down. Or get a flag already on a pole and replace the flag. I think they are stapled on.

Best answer: Our 3x5 flags in scouts are on an 8' pole for parade use. The poles are wooden and heavy and the boys get tired. If you can find an aluminum pole it would probably be nicer to carry. This one has mixed reviews but it ticks all the boxes in what you want in a parade flag pole. Light weight, adjustable, and has the clips for the flag on it already.

It took me less than three minutes and did the same in both Pride in London and Pride Austin.

I have a telescoping pole similar to the one linked by Dr. Twist, only it's designed for being held in your hand, like this one, only mine is plastic (and not as nice looking).
I definitely recommend a purpose-built flagpole, if cost is not the issue. I've used jerry-rigged, and I've used a real one, and the real one is much better (clips, telescoping). A nice, lightweight ~6ft pole can be rested on your shoulder and still be nicely visible above your head - very useful if you're marching in the parade.
Happy Pride!
