Mortgage Professionals - How do you start as an MLO?

So, I am exploring the idea of a career change into the mortgage industry and have looked into taking the MNLS classes and exam to apply for licensing. It looks like I need to be sponsored by a company to get my license (Virginia), but I have no experience (or license) to get hired. All job postings I've found required a couple years of experience in mortgages.

I would be transitioning from healthcare management. I definitely do not want to start at the bottom (teller level) to get my foot in the door with a bank. I'm in a small-to-midsize market.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

TIA!
