Looking for design/decor inspiration (with dark wood paneling)

I am moving to a new apartment with and my usual decor searches are failing me. My new place is on the garden (i.e., semi-basement) floor of a classic Brooklyn brownstone. It has gorgeous, original, dark (walnut) wood paneling that extends halfway up the walls in the living room and master bedroom. (I am renting so no, this cannot be painted.) Help me find inspo photos?

My style tends toward the bright and white end of the spectrum, lots of neutrals in light colors and tending toward transitional/modern in style. (What will work for me is that I like mixing contemporary and traditional pieces, like our 1930s round oak dining table with clean-lined contemporary white chairs.) I really need some inspiration to see how this will work for me, but I'm only finding rooms with wood paneling that covers the entire wall. Also, I'm looking for Victorian-era paneling, when most of what I find is more like 60s-era paneling.

My Google skills are failing me and my Pinterest boards are full of white walls. I've looked a bit on Apartment Therapy but haven't found anything quite like this--so I'm crowdsourcing eyes. Can you point me toward photos of (decorated) rooms like this? Any style will work, I'm just trying to get a sense for color, shape, etc.

Bonus points if the inspiration rooms are small!

Best answer: The word "wainscoting" instead of "paneling" may help your searching.

Best answer: Sounds like wainscoting, so 'dark wainscoting' or 'walnut,' 'mahogany,' or 'stained wainscoting' might be your search terms. (You could lean large, framed art against the panels to break up the visual sweep, provided you don't have small kids or pets that would knock them over.)

Best answer: Keywords that might work for you: eclectic, moody, dark, panelled, Brooklyn townhouse (no seriously it worked pretty ok)

Remodelista has a bunch of inspiration (granted, it's remodelista, so amazing light and high end furnishings and mostly done with moody wall color rather than wood, but it might spark some ideas)

Response by poster: I'm so grateful for all this. You get a best answer! And you get a best answer!

Thanks especially to slipthought and Iris Gambol for pointing out that I'm talking about wainscoting--very helpful for a nonfunctional brain.
