Help me name an old dude, please!

Tomorrow... Make that later today, I'm picking up a senior Plott Hound (mix?), 'Cody', from the shelter. He's joining my clowder of four cats.

He's seven or eight years old and was found as a stray on March 28, 2018. The shelter has no other information on him, other than that he's good with other dogs and, apparently, cats.

Cody is a good name, but I've fostered a Cody before, a brindle Boxer, and am considering not having a Cody V.2. I'd like to give him a name suitable for an old man, something easy to call at the dog park. Preferably a human name, so Spot and Fido are out.

My sister-in-law suggested Atticus (Finch).

Any other suggestions?

The cats do not have human names, but their names fit each of them: Bug (he's a lovable pest), Pumbaa and Timon (brothers; one is huge, the other tiny), and Kioko Kohana (she's a happy little flower).

If you want something similar-sounding, how about Toby? I think he could be a good Toby.

Connor - good solid name, evocative of the dignified and dashing Sean Connery and
not far from his original name
posted by metahawk at 11:21 PM on May 24, 2018

Bonus - the name Connor may come from the Gaelic word for dog or hound - more specifically
Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic Conchobhar, a compound name composed of the elements conn (wisdom, counsel, strength) or con (hound, dog) and cobhair (aid). “High, will, desire” and “hound lover” are other definitions attributed to the name

I also came in to suggest Toby, especially if he's already started to learn "Cody."

Cocoa/Coco would be a cute name for a brown dog with cream-colored accents. But probably too similar to Kioko. Was also going to suggest Kona, like the coffee, but probably too similar to Kohana.

Other similar sounds: Colby? Cory?

He looks kind of like a Peter to me. Or a Roddy.

That dog's name is Cletus or Ernie.

Yes, I know they all sound like servants from Downton Abbey. (Actually, their butler was Carson, another good name.)

I was going to say it depends on how long he knows himself as his name, but considering the first thing I thought when I looked at him was Opie, I'd go with Opie or Odie. Both are close enough to Cody.

I came in to suggest Arthur, but I'd also consider Morris, Norm, or Stanley.

He looks like Walter or Hank to me.

Congratulations on your new family member—and it’s so great that you’re rescuing an older shelter dog!

(Also—I absolutely ADORE the fact that you used the word “clowder” in your question!!!! There is nothing better than a clowder of cats!)

(Stanley would be extra funny because there are so many dogs named Stella wandering around now, you could reenact Streetcar named Desire!)

I'd name that doggo Elmer, at least he looks like an Elmer to me.

Whatever you name him, I bet he's going to be a wonderful addition to your family. Hope the cats take to him, and vice-versa. Good on you for giving him a home. I wish you many happy years together. Please spoil him appropriately.

Cormac, as in McCarthy, as in No Country for Old Men (which to be honest I haven't read/seen, but it does seem to feature an older man). Call him "Cory!" (close to Cody) in the park.

Response by poster: I adopted the dog from the Logan County Humane Society in Russellville, KY, so he might become Logan. That said, I really like Obediah Jones aka Obie or Jonesy. We'll see in the next few days. Currently, he doesn't respond to any name, not even Cody.

Here's the fantastic part about adopting a senior: he gives the cats the respect they expect. He avoids looking at them directly and, twice now, has yelped and cried when he had to pass "too close" to one of the cats (too close: less than three feet). So... Maybe he knew a bully cat before? Either way, he's sound asleep on his new bed and the cats are investigating him, carefully.

He's also housebroken ;)

He is as chill as he seems in his photos, although he was terrified to get into the car the first time, terrified to enter the vet's office and then terrified to enter my house the first time (which might have been because two of the cats greeted me at the door). Once he's in a place, though, he seems to settle down and realize he's in an okay place. (

By his breed standard, he should be 60-65 pounds; currently, he's 44.6. I'm hoping to get that number up in the next few months.
