Where in the world should I go in the first two weeks of Oct. 2018?

My best friend lives in China. I live in North America. We try to get together every couple years for about a week. His work schedule means that early October is usually best. We're both seasoned travellers and we like to meet up somewhere we've never been before. I have ideas of where I'd like to go, but I want to go somewhere different where something unique might be happening. Where is that?

Where in the world is something interesting happening at the beginning of October 2018? Maybe an interesting festival, a sporting event, a concert, anything that we can anchor a trip around. Something that I'd look back upon when I'm an old man and think how glad I was that I got to experience that cool event once.

Maybe the human tower festival in Catalonia (concursdecastells.cat) or the hot air balloon festival in New Mexico (balloonfiesta.com)?

On October 22 in Kyoto, during the day there's Jidai Matsuri/Festival of the Ages and at night in nearby Kurama, the Kurama Fire Festival.

This list should fit the bill. Or just pick a bunch of places you're interested in already and look up holidays/festivals and see if there's overlap?

Best answer: October is prime trekking season in Nepal. With a week, you could do one of the shorter treks. It’s also the time of year for Dashain, one of Nepal’s biggest festivals. I haven’t been there for it, but Nepalis know how to throw a great festival.
