I need 3 names that flow
April 18, 2018 2:31 PM   Subscribe

I need names for 3 categories that have a clear order to them. A group of us are trying to come up with this list and we have been having problems. [Fast, Medium, Slow] and [Large, Medium, Small] are examples, but none of them quite work.

I want to stay away from the last category being a term that might make someone bristle. I don't want to call anyone Slow. Money is the determining factor, so calling something Small is also not ideal. It is surprisingly hard to find lists of 3 ordered items.
Metals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) are out since that conflicts with other categories. Geography and Color for similar reasons. The main issue is that the order of the categories has to be obvious.

Can you do things that are just alphabetical? So like ABC trees: Aspen, Birch, Cypress, or ABC animals: Aardvark, Bison, Caterpillar etc.

Otherwise, how about Tic, Tac, and Toe; or Snap, Crackle, and Pop, or something like that?

Winter, Summer, Spring, Fall

You don't mention what the list is for, but if it's for training or finance purposes the seasons can go well with this (Summer is fruitful (Major Cash flow), Spring is for planting (Portfolio review), Fall is for preparing for the barren Winter (minus cash flow) etc, etc.

Response by poster: Sorry, no animals and the order has to make sense - like if I tell you that you are in the orange group, you should know that is the middle group. I know this is really picky. There is no need for it to be "clever" either =)

If it's money...something like "Planning, Building, Maintaining"? Or "Plan, Build, Protect"? Save, Spend, Splurge?

I think you have two conflicting mandates here. When it comes to money stuff, categories are purposefully vague so that no one has to be in the "Economy" or "Budget" group and non-linear so that no one can deduce that the "Bluebirds" are in fact the "Budget" group.

this makes me think of the development codenames for Magic: the Gathering expansions. they don't imply literal order the way "small, medium, large" does, but they usually riff on familiar "X, Y, and Z" phrases, so there's still some implication of proper order. some examples:

bacon, lettuce, tomato
earth, wind, fire
control, alt, delete
snap, crackle, pop
rock, paper, scissors
live, long, prosper
lights, camera, action
shake, rattle, roll
hook, line, sinker
friends, romans, countrymen
huey, dewey, louie
blood, sweat, tears
lock, stock, barrel

ilovewinter: "Rock, paper, scissors"

This seems like a winner to me. There is a clearly accepted order, but the entire point of the game is that none of the three is "better" than the other - it's a circular hierarchy where no individual category is "best" or "worst" intrinsically.

Otherwise, Larry, Moe, Curly ...?
