Is this guy (link leads to imgur photos) a northern red-legged frog? It's easily the largest native frog I've ever seen.

I get a fair number of small tree frogs at my house, but I've never seen this species of frog in the 40 years I've lived in the Puget Sound area. I'd guess the critter was a bit over 3" long. This is on the south end of Whidbey Island, in Washington state.

I'm really just curious as to what species it is.

(I was able to persuade it that sitting in my driveway without any cover was perhaps not the best option for an extended life span.)

Could it be the Oregon spotted frog?

Best answer: This page has species accounts with range maps; it looks like Oregon Spotted Frog is not found on Whidbey Island, but Northern Red-Legged Frog is; I think it’s almost certainly what you have.

I agree with Northern Red-Legged Frog. Cool find! And thanks for moving it to safety.

yay! Red Leg! I saw one crossing the road near Bailey a couple of years ago-- this time of year they're on the move. Nice find!
