Rush tickets for Broadway shows?

A colleague and I will have an unanticipated evening free in Manhattan tomorrow night. It would be awesome to see a show. Of course we have no plan and no tickets. I think there must be a way to get tickets at the last minute, preferably for cheap. Can someone clue us in so we can avoid scalpers and scammers?

Best answer: TKTS ticket booths are exactly for this.

Best answer: If you don't feel like waiting on line, you can try Today Tix. They have tickets for several days out, so you don't need to wait for the day of.

If there is a specific show you want to see that isn't available at TKTS or Today Tix, you can try contacting the box office at that specific theater directly (and/or checking the official website of the show.) If there are seats left a certain time before the show, they'll often be sold off cheaply that day.

If you contact the theatre, the phrase you want to ask about is "rush tickets." Ask when rush tickets go on sale. Also ask if they have any guesses about how many rush tickets they'll have that night, and how far in advance you might have to queue to get them. (Obviously they can't predict for sure how many tickets they'll have left or how many people will show up to claim them, so they may or may not be willing to guess.)

On my recent visit to NYC, I saw In And Of Itself by showing up at the theatre a little more than 2 hours in advance, and paying $30 for a front-row seat that would normally cost $88.

TKTS line tip: if you enjoy straight plays (i.e. non-musicals) there’s a play line that’s always very short.
