Elementary Aged Adventure

In hopes of encouraging more reading in the house, I want to create a bookshelf of Adventure for my elementary aged kids.

I would specifically like to find some non-fiction stories and biographies. I’d LOVE to find a children’s book about Peter Freuchen for example. Please help stock our shelves.

Response by poster: I should add that I’m looking for short-ish stories as this particular shelf will be in the lavatory.

The Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls books feature single-page biographies of a broad and eclectic selection of illustrious women both modern and historic. Tons of adventures, all of them true.

And Rebel Girls is a great book for a boy - they need to be exposed to stories of strong women to broaden their understanding of all the possibilities that are out there for both people in general and females in particular.

Women in Science and Women in Sports by Rachel Ignotofsky! They are also single page bios with great graphic novel style illustrations.

In terms of general non-fiction, I recommend The Secret Project by Jonah Winter, Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatiuh, and Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales.

There are a bunch of great one off picture book bios that have recently come out too like Wangari's Trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter, The Noisy Paintbox by Barb Rosenstock, and I Dissent by Debbie Levy.

Your local children's librarian would also love a question like this!
