Santa needs to know what to give to whom

A month ago I sewed a set of four extra large Christmas stockings. Now I want to make name tags for the stockings. Could someone tell me how to do this in Word?

I'm aiming for a fairly simple name tag. I want to create business card-sized tags with some kind of border and to put a first name on each a nice font, and then to print the tags off on cardstock.

I'm trying to use Word to do it, and I've tried using some online directions but could never get it to work properly. Like there's a template for a place card with a lovely scrolled border which would be perfect, but when I tried printing it off the border didn't appear on the page, though the names did. Then I tried a few times to do it in text boxes but couldn't seem to get that to work either.

So, people who have more Word-fu than me, how do I make these four nametags?

I would use a template for an existing layout to make sure you get the right size. Go to "new from Template", then pick "on-line template" and find the one that fits the size labels that you want. Use Word help for how to work with labels - fixed elements (eg borders) vs. variable (eg names)

Best answer: Just wanted to suggest that if you're using Avery (or compatible) business cards, I wound up choosing their online tool over Word to print some Christmas cookie labels last year. They had a much better choice of template designs and a surprisingly easy to use interface.

Response by poster: Just made the stocking tags today, using Avery. They had a very attractive scrolled border name tag template that I was able to adapt to exactly what I had wanted after a bit of fiddling. I was very pleased with how smoothly the whole process went -- the interface is indeed very intuitive and I didn't get frustrated or have any difficulties at all. I printed off the tags on a piece of scrap paper to see how it looked. They'd turned out perfect, so I then printed them off on cardstock, cut them to size, hole punched them, and attached them to the stockings with some embroidery floss. I'm quite satisfied with how they look.

And I am thinking I will be using Avery to make my own business cards in the near future. Business cards have been on my to do list for awhile, and it's awesome that I now know of a way to make them for practically nothing and only print off as many as I want, whenever I want, rather than having to buy 500 or something like that. So this was an especially fruitful AskMe!

Thank you both for your answers!
