Name my vegan Australian meat-pie company
March 14, 2018 10:04 AM   Subscribe

Looking for clever/apt business names that I can use for my plant-based, Australian meat pie company.

The savory meat pie is an Australian classic and as an Australian living in America, I often find myself craving the food of my homeland. By combining this warm nostalgia with my passion for plant-based living, I started baking vegan meat pies.

While the market of selling Australian meat pies in America is already saturated (Boomerang Pies are a big player), there is a demand, I beleive, for a vegan alternative to this meaty, time-honored meal.

I would love some help naming this company?

I am looking for something that taps into the Australian influence (especially becuase they will be authentically Aussie) and also taps into the positive, value based vibes of veganism.

Open to puns and fun titles, but also something that sums up the mission statement. Also, a percentage of every sale will go towards a farm sanctuary, if that offers more insight.

Thanks!

Playing off Aussie slang for meat pie (Dog's eye), but minus Canis: how about
  • Analog's Eye?
Company mascot is a robot pup mascot named Analog.
Or perhaps add in a rhyme on Vegan:
  • Teagan's Neat Wry Vegan Meat Pie

*Or "Vegan" if you specifically want to use that word; though I think "Veggie" is more inclusive and less likely to 'disturb' omnis.

Hi! This isn't exactly what you asked for but I'm going to offer my opinion anyhow.

I'm a Kiwi, and eat meat (as well as occasional non-meat) pies. I acknowledge the US market is different (I lived there for a few years) but when I think about a lot of pie/sausage roll etc. companies, they don't really have cutesy names. They're more likely to be named after someone's Grandma or the specific location where they are made. There could be a valid marketing reason for it, maybe it's something to research a bit. If I had been meandering the aisles of Albertsons and saw an '[Aussie cliche] pie' I would have internally cringed, taken a snapchat for my friends back home, and moved on. I do love the idea of vegan pies, don't get me wrong! I just read some of these suggestions and think "I would never buy a pie with that name".

If it were me, I would probably go for something simple like 'Sanctuary pies' or 'Bush tucker'. Where do you come from in Oz? Is there a place that holds sentimental value for you and might make a good pie name? What is the meat replacement you are mainly using?

Good luck, it's a great idea.

Response by poster: Thank you for your earnest reply, BeeJiddy. It's much appreciated.

I completely agree with where you are coming from as the last thing I want is to come across as novelty or cringe-worthy, especially to those who understand.

I'm from a town in Sydney called Avalon. That might be a worthwhile name? And, I'm using a ground beef substitute at the moment but am going to give seitan a go to reduce the cost per pie. Maybe there's a name in there?

It's very difficult but you have given me some food for thought and I will definitely do some more research.

I’m not into cutesy names myself, but as a vegan, I wouldn’t even bother to look at the ingredients of something that appears to be a meat pie unless there’s a clear “possibly vegan” flag in the name or it actually said “vegan” or “seitan” on the label - on the front - I wouldn’t turn it over to check the back because the chances of something like that being vegan are close to zero. Vegan flags would include something related to kindness or compassion or even something like lotus. That said, this is an awesome idea, and I hope to get a chance to try them some day.

I realize that omnivores are kind, compassionate, and like lotuses, but in the name of a commercial product, these signal “possibly vegan” to me.

Response by poster: Thank you so much for adding that, FencingGal and for your kind words.

Couldn't agree with you more that this product being plant-based is much more of a drive than it being Australian. This is definitely the avenue where I want to focus.

I was playing around with "Good Piebrations" but also love brand names like "Earth Balance" and "Veganaise". Maybe I should research this a bit more ...

You've raised a great point. Thanks so much!

I’d veer away from punny; nobody likes saying them aloud (unless they are really apt and elegant, which you’d know if you saw.)

What’s your grandmother’s first name? Grandmothers have great names. I’m a vegetarian, love convenience food, had no idea savory vegetarian Australian pies were a thing, and would not hesitate to buy something called, like, Molly’s Round Earth vegetarian Australian pie.

My Nan's name is Maretta ... there might be a name there.

No clue how it would play with your target customer but the name that sprung to my mind was "Vegan Hemisphere Pies."

Also, according to this article, wines with pictures of animals on the labels sell better. Not sure if that applies to meat pies, but it’s something to think about. Yellow Tail, featuring a kangaroo on the label, is the best selling wine in America. And I must confess that, as a complete nondrinker who knows nothing about wine, I once bought a bottle for a friend because I liked the kangaroo. So maybe you can work a koala into this. Or a platypus.

    Maretta Meatless?

I like Good Piebrations. I like punny for this business idea because it plays off the idea of Australians being warm/funny/good-humoured. You can always brand in two ways (punny and earnest) and keep the brand that turns out to be more popular.

Supporting the earnest vegan signalling: in my neck of the woods a fake meat product is roaring off the shelves, and it's called Sunfed Chicken-Free Chicken. (The local poultry producers are complaining, but that's another story). I think that is a good example of something that is very clearly vegan (Chicken-free) and upbeat/healthy (Sunfed).

If you were from Sydney, for example, I think Sydney Vegan Pies would be perfect.

Or maybe something more with more allusions like Red Earth Vegan Pie.

I like Maretta Meatless Meat Pies.
It's not punny but it's alliterative, which is close. It's clearly meatless. It's clearly a meat pie. I think anybody who wants to ensure it's an Australian style meatless meat pie can look at the ingredients/about and get that info there.

You need two names, one for the company, one for the product. And then varieties...

    Maretta's Farm
    Vegan Australian Pies
    Black Bean Flavor

As far as the company name, you are hampered by the Americans' appalling lack of knowledge about Oz. It's hard to think of anything much beyond wildlife (roos and koalas) and the Sydney Opera House that's going to be instantly recognizable to the broad US market. I suppose that's why you get your shrimp off the barby at "Outback" steak house.

Personally, I would leave the word "meat" out of it altogether. Just let the "vegan" carry the load. I wouldn't want any feedback like "it said meat but there was no meat" no matter how clear it was when read carefully.

I Googled "vegan Jamaican patties" because that is the closest analog I could think of. I found lots of yummy-looking recipes but no products. If you want to make the business a bit bigger, recruit a Jamaican friend because there could be a market opening there. Also, "vegan English Pasty" brought back only cookbooks.

Amy's is a vegetarian brand. When I see their products, I know they're going to be vegetarian, and I also know that if one of their products is vegan, the ingredient list will start with the word "vegan," so it's super easy to check. "Vegan" is offputting to some people, and they avoid that by not having it on the front, but they have it on the back, so vegans know where to look. So you could use Maretta's as a brand and just have it be a vegan brand. But I think I'd start with something like "Maretta's No-Meat Pies." And then if the brand becomes known, it could be changed to just "Maretta's" and underneath say something like "Australian No-Meat Pies." (Not sure if "no meat" is really that great.)

Just as examples, other brands I know to be vegan are Field Roast, Gardein, and Beyond Meat. Morningstar is vegetarian. Of those, "Beyond Meat" is the most explicit.

As I said, a lot of people have a negative reaction to the word "vegan," but if something said "no meat" on the front, I'd check to see if it was vegan. "Plant-based" was initially supposed to mean vegan and minimally processed (I think it was actually invented as a term by T. Colin Campbell), but it has become a popular buzzword and has no real meaning anymore. It's kind of the new version of "natural."
