Recommend high-risk obgyns/obstetricians in NYC?

I'm a woman with several high risk factors trying to pregnant, and I've grown to dislike the OB practice I've been seeing. Who should I switch to?

Can you recommend a high-risk obgyn/obstetrician practice in NYC for me as I continue to try to conceive?

I've been seeing Maternal Fetal Medicine, and while I really love some of the doctors there, I've become very uncomfortable with the practice overall - once I see a doc they're fine, but when I call with a real problem, they try so hard to push me away first, it scares me. After my last incident with them, I keep worrying that someday I'll end up in real danger because they don't believe me when I call and don't let me see someone soon enough.

But they're the practice I've been recommended most, and I just don't know who else to turn to. I'm older and have several existing medical conditions, so I really need an obgyn experienced enough to handle that.

Who else should I go see?

I had to see MFM for a chronic health issue during my pregnancy, but my regular on/gyn was in charge of actually delivering my baby, and even cared for me once I developed preeclampsia and had to go into the hospital. If you like your current on/gyn, is that an option?

Also, if you are EVER concerned that a sign or symptom is threatening your or your baby’s life or health, and you feel like the doctor isn’t taking the correct steps, go to the ER. They will take you up to L&D for evaluation.

This is going way back, but my obstetricians were J. Milton Hutson and Terri Edersheim. I was high-risk because of my age (39 for my first child, 41 for my second), and my second delivery was high-risk because my appendix rupturing caused my baby to be born 10 weeks prematurely. (Both kids are thriving young adults now.)

This was all about 25 years ago, but it appears that both doctors are still in practice. Milt has a website; I haven't found one for Terri, but it might be out there. (At the time my kids were born, they were in practice together with another doctor who has since moved away.)

In my experience, both doctors were very caring and knowledgeable. I always felt I was in good hands with them.

Just want to note that this is not universally true; the hospital I went to dealt with early pregnancy issues and miscarriages in the ER. I was told to go straight to L&D starting at 20 weeks.

You can also send me a memail if you like (I had a high risk pregnancy and preterm delivery) . I think you are starting from a good place by being ready and willing to advocate for yourself and change doctors when you are uncomfortable. A lot of women get pregnant and trust their care team only to realize later that they should have spoken up when they felt that something was wrong.

Garrick Leonard at NY Weill Cornell. I can't say enough good things about him. He delivered both my girls (and drove in from NJ to see him, so that says something). I happened upon him when he was covering for an OB/GYN I was seeing at the time. She was nasty and miserable. I found him, loved him, and actually fired her from my hospital bed.

He's very matter of fact, but kind and genuine. He does speak quickly (a genuine New Yorker!), but even after I had major complications during my first pregnancy and was high risk with my second, I trusted him completely. I went on to become a high-risk antepartum RN and never found anyone better. Give him a call.

One other thought - have you gone to see at Reproductive Endocrinologist? How long have you been trying? Do you know if you're ovulating? Have you read Taking Charge of your Fertility? This may be the direction you should be going in if you've been trying for longer than six months and nothing is happening.
