What do you eat with Japanese milk bread?

I just made the Japanese milk bread recipe from the America's Test Kitchen bread cookbook. What should I eat with it? I'd love something savory and hearty, but all the suggestions I'm googling pretty much start at end at butter and condensed milk. What would you suggest?

There's an exceptionally decadent steak sandwich that features milk bread; you may not have access to wagyu, but I bet it'd be good with a slightly less expensive cut as well.

Best answer: If you make it again shape it into buns for burgers

Toasted with butter and molasses would be my first choice, but if you're looking for something savory I'd suggest having it with a hearty beef stew.

This is the only bread our kid eats. Turkey sandwiches, Hamburgers, and Hot Dogs are all reported to taste even better on Milk Bread!

Do you like sandwiches? Any sandwich tastes better on Milk Bread. Toast some and try it with Pastrami!

If you have a toaster oven, Japanese bread is awesome for any 'stuff on toast' dishes. I love spreading a piece with pesto, and a squizzle of Japanese mayonnaise.

Thick slices, toasted but still soft in the centre with a generous amount of herbed soft cheese, carmalized onions and something like sprouts or arugula is to die for. Milk bread is a great base for using strong flavoured toppings imo.

And yes, seconding grilled cheese. Especially with strong cheddar.

A local restaurant makes 'toasts' that are basically a small meal on their own, with one thick slice of milk bread and your choice of topping. I always get the egg/seaweed, which is basically thick egg salad with kewpie mayo and nori, but they also offer sausage/bacon/egg, salmon mayonnaise (probably shredded salmon and kewpie mayo) and the intriguing "anchovy garlic oil". It can't be too much different from the butter in this recipe .

Japanese style curry is great for this. I like to do thin sliced pork chops with lots of carrots and potatoes and sometimes broccoli and mushrooms. Use the bread instead of rice for wiping up all the fantastic gravy. Don't forget some pickles on the side to cut through all the richness.

You might look up savory brioche recipes, and see if you find something you like. I love this Ottolenghi recipe for roasted mushrooms and a poached egg on toast (unlike most of his recipes, the ingredient list is not too long).

Response by poster: I made this teriyaki burger recipe tonight and it was outrageous. Can't wait to bake more milk bread and try some more of these. Thanks, hive mind.
