What movie is this quote from?

It's a movie from I think the 1980s. The student turns bad and fights the teacher, but the teacher wins and says, "I taught you everything you know. I did not teach you everything I know". I tried google but all I got was some Sherlock Holmes fan-fic and a vague reference to a Star Wars character. Not much to go on, I know, but it's a memorable line so I'm sure somebody knows it.

Baltimore Bullet with James Colburn?

This is a surprisingly common question.

One newspaper columnist say it's The Color of Money here. But another source says that the quotation has an older history than that, going back at least as far as the 1928 movie The Mysterious Lady with Greta Garbo.

Response by poster: Well, I didn't see any of those, but following crazy with stars' link above they mention Rocky IV. That might be the one in my memory, but it was so long ago I'm not sure. It seems to be a more common line than I thought. Any others?

I literally just watched this line being said yesterday in the 2014 animated series Dragons: Defenders of Berk, the spinoff tv series from How to Train Your Dragon. So I'm going to suggest that this is a pretty common saying.

Yes, I heard this recently - but I can't recall what movie it was in. So I might agree with Mizu that it's a bit more common. Goodreads is attributing it to Orson Scott Card. Google, though, is finding lots of other options.

I know of 2 places where i have more-or-less heard this. One is in "Rocky IV", and the other is "RED".

Rocky IV:
"You better go slow. You ain't as young as springtime no more.

I'm still young enough to whip your butt.

Yeah? How will you do that? You taught me everything you know.

Almost everything. Remember, you fight great...but I'm a great fighter."

RED:
"Frank Moses: [while grappling with Cooper] Kordesky trained you?

William Cooper: Yeah.

Frank Moses: I trained Kordesky.

[dislocates Cooper's shoulder]"

That seems like the whole premise of the kill bill movies?

Response by poster: I think it must have been Rocky IV that I remember it from. Thanks all.

(That's actually from Rocky III, not Rocky IV. I'm sure I know this for some other reason than I watch that movie every single time I see it on TV, but anyway.)

@holborne - of course it is! it's from the ending. i just realised that! ugh. however when searching for the script the site url was "http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts/r/rocky-iv-script-transcript-4.html" so I didn't give it a 2nd thought. fact check fail.....

It's also, sort of, in Near Dark - after our hero dispatches the deputy chief vampire the actual chief vampire says, "I taught Severen everything he knew, but not everything I know."

Why did I think this was in The Last Jedi? But I can't find any internet confirmation.

I am pretty sure I also saw this in a recent-ish episode of The Librarians. Is that a thing you watch?

Response by poster: Nope, I've only seen the 3 original Star Wars movies and I've never heard of the Librarians. I was thinking that maybe it was in Remo Williams so I went and watched that, but it wasn't in there. But it was nice seeing Captain Janeway in an earlier role

I feel confident in saying that it's not from The Last Jedi.
