Turtle honeymoon in February

My husband and I would like to go on a delayed honeymoon in February. Conditions: we must be able to see sea turtles (either dive with them, watch them lay eggs on the beach, or hatch), and it should not be too far from Japan, where we live.

We couldn't go on a honeymoon when we got married last April, and this year, February seems like the only time we can both take some time off to go somewhere.

We tried looking for turtle seasons (and to avoid monsoons etc.!) and so far, we thought maybe Malaysia would be nice because my husband used to live in Singapore and we could go there, too, but the turtle season (egg-laying and hatching both) seems to be over then, so now we're considering the Philippines, but don't know what else we could do there.

We want to spend about a week there, maybe split between two places, relax, exlore, see turtles, and eat good food. Difficulty: I am a vegetarian.

Can anyone think of a good place for us to visit from Japan this February?

Response by poster: Sorry, we just found out that we can't travel to the turtle resort in the Philippines because my husband's job deems it too dangerous and probably won't allow it.

Perhaps on Kuroshima near the Sea Turtle Research Center, or on one of the other islands in Japan's southern archipelago.

Perhaps Australia? February is peak hatching season for Loggerhead turtles at Mon Repos national park in Queensland.

There are lots of marine turtles (and companies organising encounters) in the Great Barrier Reef as well.

Seconding Australia. Here's some more information about turtle hatching season in Queensland. Here's an article on how to see them. Here's some adorable video of the hatching.

I saw green sea turtles while snorkling off the coast of Maui, Hawaii in December a few years ago. All of the snorkling/diving outfits were calling the location "Turtle Town".

Best answer: You could go to Thailand to dive with the turtles. Fly to Phuket, get on one of these liveaboard boats for a 4 day tour (February is good season for the Andaman Sea region, not the gulf side). (The website is for an agency that books the diving for you and helps you choose which boat - I've been with them many times, they're great - using an agency is the custom in Thailand for booking dive boats). Most likely going to have turtles, but it's not a specially themed "dive with turtles!" sort of thing. Bonus: great food, relaxing atmosphere, beautiful weather and scenery.

Best answer: Sri Lanka.

So many turtles you'll get tired of them plus an indigenous vegetarian culture that makes meals simple.

Best answer: I spent a very happy Christmas a few years ago at Tranquility Island Resort in Vanuatu. They have a hatchery for hawksbill turtles (the little babies are IMPOSSIBLY cute; your voice will automatically go up 2 octaves) as well as diving. I am a vegetarian and had no difficulty with the food.
