Asian characters on iPad lock screen

My four-year-old was playing with my iPad and now there are some Asian characters (I am not sure of the language) appearing on the lock screen below the date. My searching has found a few references to this being the result of the calendar being set to Japanese or Buddhist in the Language & Region settings, but mine is set to Gregorian. (I've tried switching it around but it has had no effect.) Help!

Push both the home and power buttons simultaneously for about 1 second, and the device will take a snapshot of the screen. If you post the screenshot, it will be much easier to say what it is.

Best answer: Go to Settings. Click on the Calendar icon. Go to "Alternate Calendars" and turn it off
