Find a quote about the past & nostalgia

Recently read a quotation but didn't record it, but wish I had. It was something like, "The past seems preferable because fear has been removed." Maybe Carlyle? Have spent way too much time trying to find it again.

You may be thinking of Carlyle's remark in The French Revolution, "one most important element withdrawn from the Past Time, the haggard element of Fear", which I quoted in answer to another AskMeFi question a few months ago.

Seems pretty close to what I was looking for, but not sure it was it. Thanks!

You could try Quote Investigator. This touches upon that idea a very little bit.
