Name that book, again: French guy does some... stuff?

I have another forgotten book title question. This one was set in colonial New York, with a French aristocrat; he comes over from Europe, does some stuff in NY, then goes on a trip down a river...

...the Hudson, I guess? And then down into the South. He's friends with some American guy. And there's some stuff about farms. Sorry, my memory of what actually happened in the book is only marginally better than the my memory of what it's called.

Is this a novel or are you thinking of Alexis de Tocqueville?

Yes and yes! Per your link, the novel was Peter Carey's Parrot and Olivier in America, inspired by his life. Thank you.
