Know nothing about art? Perfect.

For those who have little or no knowledge of art and are not from Pittsburgh, I have some questions for you about what you know about Andy Warhol.

1. What look comes to mind when you think of Andy Warhol? How would you describe what he looks like? Do NOT Google him and look at pictures before you answer this.

Now Google him and look at some pictures. You will see he had many "looks."

1. Is there any particular look you associate with him? You don't need to link to a particular photo, just generally describe the look.
2. Are there any looks you wouldn't associate with him or didn't know existed? Again, no need to link to particular photos, just generally describe.

Bonus question: Are you aware of or have you ever seen the polaroids of him dressed in drag?

This is not homework!

Fluffy white hair and glasses are the look I associate with him. I have never specifically thought of any different looks *not* being associated with him. I have never seen photos of him in drag. I'm also picturing a black turtleneck, although I don't know if I'm conflating him with, like, Dieter from Sprockets.

1. Fluffy white hair or kind of...bowl cut with bangs? flat white hair with dark rimmed glasses. Wearing something collared. Kind of Karl Lagerfeld-adjacent.

1. Upon looking, I guess the striped breton shirt is most familiar, although in my mind I had him in a suit jacket with shirt and tie. Turtleneck is also very familiar.
2. I guess...not? Like you could tell me any look was something worn by Andy Warhol and I would believe you.

Bonus--no, not aware and have never seen drag polaroids.

basically what Stellaluna said. In my mental picture he is also holding a camera for some reason.

Without looking at the above comments: definitely frizzy white hair that's standing on end, maybe 4 inches long-ish. I feel like sometimes round glasses or sunglasses. Don't have a clear image in my mind of clothing. Physically tall and very thin with prominent cheekbones. Overall kind of scraggly/unfinished but in a deliberate way, not a gross way.

Now I'm off to google and see how I did!

Pretty much everything I know about Andy Warhol is from a Miracleman comic book. This is my recollection of how he was drawn in the comic: straight bushy hair with a kind of centre part. Glasses. Wearing a black turtle-neck.

After googling I guess the part is off to the side and he wasn't always wearing glasses. Looking at Google images there was a picture of him in a suit and tie where he just looks like a generic guy in a suit (his hair wasn't bushy there).

As far as polaroids of him being in drag I could believe it. Didn't he have some connection to Divine?

For the second part of your question: definitely the black turtleneck rings a bell now that I see it, in fact I almost said I associated him with simple severe clothing but I wasn't sure whether I was imagining it. All the horizontally striped shirts fit my mental image of him as well. The leather jackets less so. I found the suits somewhat surprising.

(1) skinny white guy with glasses

(2) Google Images search turns up pretty much what I expected, also weird hair.

Also, I'm... pretty sure I had conflated his signature hairstyle with Eraserhead's.

What look comes to mind when you think of Andy Warhol? Cambell's soup can. Marilyn Monroe.

How would you describe what he looks like? Like Albert Einstein

Is there any particular look you associate with him? Huh. He doesn't look anything like Albert Einstein. I guess I usually think of the messy white hair and glasses, which is probably where I got the Einstein connection.

Are there any looks you wouldn't associate with him or didn't know existed? The "new wave" type look with the neat hair parted to the side. Also, the looks where he has dark hair.

Are you aware of or have you ever seen the polaroids of him dressed in drag? No and no.

What comes to mind? Uncombed Truman Capote, sometimes wearing a striped sweater & leather jacket.
He went bald young and wore a wig, according to Holy Terror, which is really interesting.

I basically know nothing about him other than he was some coked up NYC artist hipster guy and he made the cover of a Velvet Underground vinyl I own.

I picture him looking like Crispin Glover - no idea where I got that from.

(google image search)

OK so he kind of looks like Crispin Glover mated with Christopher Loyd.

Before looking on Google:

1. I think of a skinny middle aged guy wearing a black turtleneck and round black framed glasses (or no glasses) and white hair that sticks up everywhere.

After looking on Google:

2. Yeah, pretty much what I thought except there were some with his hair shorter and combed down neatly.

Bonus: nope, never knew about the Polaroids in drag but am not that surprised.

Pre-searching:
1. The soup can/Marilyn Monroe art guy, right? I have no idea what he looks like.

Post-searching:
1. Gaunt-looking white guy with glasses and an odd hairstyle.
2. Having no real preconceptions, I can't answer whether I thought they fit or not.
Bonus: Nope.

Black turtlenecks +1. Soup cans. The white, odd hair. Very commercial artist.15 minutes of fame.

Bonus: no

Black turtleneck, white wig, rosacea, glasses. Drag polaroids were commissioned by him. (I’ve worked on several films about him and met him irl.)

1. I don't recall seeing any images of Andy Warhol himself in the past. If I have, I can't directly remember it. If I imagine him, for some reason the dude my mind comes up with kind of looks like the dude in Where's Waldo - tallish, skinny, fitted clothes, stripes, glasses. I can't seem to decide what color I think his hair is, but it's a bit unkempt, could probably use a trim.

2/3/bonus. Having googled him, it seems I wasn't that far off. The looks I'm seeing on google aren't all that different from each other though. He's generally a bit severe-looking, bony, white hair, turtleneck. I suppose the drag look is one I hadn't seen and wasn't aware of.

For some reason, I pictured him as a man with a lived-in face, all black clothes, and messy/brown hair.

Having looked at the picture on Google, I'm surprised to see he's a blonde, but other than that he's pretty much what I expected. I guess I'd describe him as a proto-hipster?

I picture him looking like Crispin Glover. I have no idea why.

Crispin Glover played Andy Warhol in The Doors biopic. I know what Andy Warhol looked like in real life but this tends to override that memory because CG's (brief!) appearance was so brilliant.

1. I think of Campbell's soup cans.
2. Um, I draw a blank on what he looks like. For some reason I see a scarf and maybe he's somewhat overweight? I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him.

This is fun. Now I'm going to google his image.

Ok, wow. Nope, I have never seen a picture of him until now.
