October 18, 2017 8:05 AM Subscribe
Hi, I am the new owner of a waterproof MP3 player and I want to make a mix of songs about swimming. Recommendations?
So far I have:
Night Swimming - REM
Water - Ra Ra Riot

Sleater-Kinney, "The Swimmer". And uh, Tool's "Ænima", in a way.

Surfside 6, Cool In The Tube.
I mean technically it's about surfing, but you're not going to get real far surfing if you can't swim.

Weird one, but Shannon by Henry Gross. It's about the death of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish setter Shannon.
Shannon is gone. I hope she's drifting out to sea.
She always loved to swim away.

Sunblock by Emmet Swimming, bonus for song about swimming by band with "swimming" in the name!*
*Song is a metaphor and not actually about swimming, but it does mention swimming quite a bit.

It's about a fish, but The Ol' Diamondback Sturgeon by Primus would work.

Also, maybe a stretch but it's the apotheosis of music (and after "Nightswimming" represents the other pride of Athens, GA):
B52s - Rock Lobster
Edit: I see I was beat to this. Well, seconded!

I've really liked this song that I came across in my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist: Rivka's "Swim High". Stylistically, it's pretty close to what I'd describe swimming in the ocean at night might feel like, actually!

Ra Ra Riot's first album has Ghost Under Rocks, which many journalists erroneously assumed was about the band's drummer, who drowned, but rather, he was one of the contributors of that song, IIRC.

While the song (Archive, 'You Make Me Feel') in this video isn't explicitly about swimming, once you watch the vid I guarantee you'll think of swimming every time you hear the track.

Maybe darker than you're looking for but it'd be fun to swim to.

This is admittedly a pretty literal interpretation of the question, but searching for "swim" on AZLyrics turns up:
Ciara, "Swim"
Chase Atlantic, "Swim"
Lil Mama, "Swim"
Jack's Mannequin, "Swim"
Frank Ocean, "Swim Good"
Josef Salvat, "Night Swim"
and 994 other songs that include the word "swim" at least once and may or may not appeal to you. (I found the six listed here pleasant, and really liked the one by Josef Salvat, who I hadn't heard of before tonight.)

One of my all-time favorite songs is about swimming: 'The Diver' by Gravenhurst.
Also comes to mind:
- 'Great Lake Swimmers' by the band with the same name (can't find a Youtubelink for this one). Other tracks of theirs might also qualify.
- 'Missings Islands' and/or 'An Insular Life' by Shearwater. Not about swimming per se but with references to water, sailing, the sea,...
- 'Seven seas' by Echo & the Bunnymen.
This entry in the Guardian's Readers Recommend-blog might be of interest. RR is an inavlaubale source for other searches for 'songs about x/y/z'.
