The Strangers (2008 film) Alternate Reading

I recall stumbling upon an "alternate" reading of the 2008 horror, The Strangers and I can't find it. See inside for what I recall from the theory (spoilers too but geez, it was almost 10 yrs ago):
In this version, Liv Tyler's character, Kristen, is having an affair with Mike, the friend of her Boyfriend (James, who proposes to her). It vaguely fills some plot holes:
1. It accounted for Mike showing up to the cabin way way way too early before getting his head promptly blown off.
2. It accounted for what would otherwise be a continuity error or weird editing decision: Kristen and James are found murdered in their dress clothes even though they're stalked after Kristen changes into jeans and flannel.
The alternate reading was something like, Liv Tyler's character, Kristen, survives (as evinced by her gasping at the end). "The Strangers" (the explanation we see, the movie) are something she's made up to account for the bloody outcome of what is essentially a totally psychotic-jealousy murder. The continuity error is in her re-telling of the story.
But there was more. I've been googling frantically for what feels like forever and I need to get the whole alternate story because it was really compelling. Does anyone recall this theory? Have you heard it?
