Yet another "help me remember a book" question

I'm trying to remember a book I read in the mid-00s, and was probably pretty freshly published. It was a YA novel, and the part that sticks in my memory was that it was about a bookbinder who was tasked with creating an infinite/endless book.

This is more than a decade ago, so a lot of the details are fuzzy, but I think it was about a boy who was apprenticed to a bookbinder in...a tower? Lighthouse? And then he fell in love with the master's daughter, and as his final task to complete his training, he had to create this endless book. I particularly remember sections talking about different techniques he tried, and of reflective pages bouncing words back for an eternity. I think it ended up being fairly Borgesian in the resolution.

Someone suggested that the book might be Inkheart, but the synopses I've found don't quite seem to match my foggy memories.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?
