Name that movie - a guy turns into a chair?

Was there a (Japanese?) film that included a young man being transformed into an ordinary chair?

I just had a memory of seeing a bit of this film on TV sometime several years ago (by “several” I mean “maybe five”). The movie didn't look more than 20 years old. I think it was a Japanese movie with English subtitles. I don’t think it was meant to be a horror movie, but my very small memory of it feels kind of dark and suspenseful. It was a live action film, not animated.

I think the protagonist was a young man and there was some kind of star-crossed lover scenario (or possibly he had a crush on a young woman he kept encountering but didn’t really know).

In the scene I think I remember, on a public street at night, the guy was somehow turned into a chair, a wooden kitchen-chair type chair. I don’t think it was an immediate transformation; I think it took a minute, like, maybe he noticed one of his feet or legs was changed into a chair leg and then the rest happened?

And I think the young woman came along and found the chair and took it with her, not knowing its origins. Something about this was kind of suspenseful, like, would the chair be harmed, since he/it was helpless?

This sounds so weird to me that I don’t know if it’s even real. Help?

Best answer: I'm almost positive it's story 1 of Tokyo! Which is a fantastic movie and one of my favorites of all time.

Response by poster: Although I had many of the details quite wrong, I'm sure that's it! I nearly said something about their apartment being small and kind of unpleasant, but was even less sure about that part. Thank you so much!
