Where can I hear live underground music in NYC?

I'll be visiting New York City in the last week of August and i'd like to see a few underground, alternative and up-and-coming acts.
My interests are indie, hip hop, grime, jazz, avant garde/sound art, "World" music (broadly - Indian, Middle Eastern and North African) and improvisation in any genre. I'm not into seeing metal bands or dance DJs and as I said, I am also not interested in established acts . Venues might be better to list. I'll be staying in LES and i'm happy to travel out anywhere as long as I can get back easily.

Silent Barn
Union Pool has some good stuff sometimes.
You could check the Knockdown lineup too.

Pioneer Works
The Kitchen
The Rubin Museum has free music - often experimental and world music - on many Wednesday (acoustic) and Friday nights.
SHARE is an open electronic improv jam thing, formerly weekly but now somewhat unpredictable (but always Sunday nights), so best to check the Facebook group for updates or get on the mailing list.

For avant garde you should check the calendar at National Sawdust in Williamsburg. As a bonus, the space itself is amazing.

My favorite indie venue in the LES is Mercury Lounge. Small and intimate, inexpensive. Some of my favorite live music experiences have happened there.
