What size cocotte/Dutch oven?
July 1, 2017 11:00 AM   Subscribe

My guy looks longingly at my 8" diameter cast iron skillet, saying that he wants one that size "but with high sides and a lid, so I can cook a little bird for you." Um. OK.

What size cocotte or Dutch oven am I looking for and where can I get it? He's German, maybe he is talking about some kind of Cornish game hen or something? Everything I see online is either tiny for individual soups and even this one (24 oz) seems too small.

Am I using the wrong search term? Triple bonus points if I can find a good European brand. Thanks for the help!

The one you linked is tiny -- only 4 1/2" in diameter. No good unless he wants to braise pigeons.

Do you have a budget in mind? Le Creuset makes very nice pieces, but they're pricey. You might consider a secondhand item from eBay, or an Asian import.

I'd look at Lodge (not a European brand), they seem to have some good sized dutch ovens.

Response by poster: Sorry, I wasn't clear. Everything I'm finding is too small OR too large, and the 8" dutch ovens I've seen have shallow sides. I'm looking (I think) for 8" diameter and high sides. Budget isn't a huge concern ... if I can find the size I'll probably look for vintage.

The Le Creuset #22 round dutch oven (3.5 qt capacity) is probably the size you want -- the size chart here says that the diameter is 8.75 inches. I have that model, and it is a perfect size for cooking for two people. (It could fit a bird as long as it isn't an enormous steroid-enhanced chicken, for example.)

The other brand that is supposedly very good is Staub, but I have never used one personally.

Get a Staub "coq au vin" oval cocotte. Staub makes the best enameled cast iron, IMO, and the 4.25 quart size in the oval design is great for making small chicken (plus other stuff) for two.

Maybe one of these high sided cast iron skillets? That's what my pops uses to make fried chicken.

I came in here to suggest what notyou did, but I love those Coq au Vin pots.

I can't seem to be able to make US links for you, but I have oval le Creuset enameled pots and they are wonderful. Also they have life guarantee, and they really do last a lifetime. I have some enamel-ware I've inherited that is older than me. But there are really a lot of different brands out there.

Not sure where you are located but this one can't be beat for the price. I have had one for years and I'm very happy with it.

Would the Ikea SENIOR enameled pot fit the bill? There are two sizes.

Look for a vintage cast iron chicken fryer. Cast iron manufacturers made pans specifically for frying chicken. They have higher sides than a regular skillet, but are smaller than a Dutch oven.

I have the same Staub that slkinsey linked to- it's lovely and I'm super happy with it.

Response by poster: I won't threadsit anymore, but I (think) he wants to braise or bake a LITTLE bird, not a chicken, he specifically said as small in diameter as my 8" skillet, but with high sides. Maybe Dutch oven is the wrong term, but thanks for all the suggestions. I have a lot of large Dutch oven-type cookware.

This Lodge 10" isn't that much bigger than your skillet, and has high sides. It's made for camping, but I use my Lodge Dutch oven on my gas stove with no problems.

The Lodge 8-inch cast iron skillet and the Lodge 2-quart cast iron serving pot can both share a lid. I have other pieces, but my two skillets and the serving pot (my mini Dutch oven) are my weekly go-to items. The only reason I use a stainless steel pot is for boiling eggs.

I ordered mine on sale from Amazon.

Also, get the silicon handles and a couple of stainless steel spatulas and serving spoons (I got mine from Target, along with some of my pieces.) Also, a couple of trivets if you ever take the hot metal off the range top. And definitely get good kitchen mitts.

Best answer: This one looks amazing
This is the one I have that fits a "small bird", like a cornish hen. It's longer than 8 inches but that is in part because of the handles, and it's narrower, fitting the shape of the bird. It seems the brand is Cousances, a subsidiary of le Creuset. I think the size you are looking for is either 18 or 20 which is molded into the bottom. I'm not in the same house as my pot now, so I can't see. Maybe I can get my daughter to look later today.
Googling found this sweet little yellow pot, but I really like that mine is oval.
