Nice black crew socks I can buy in bulk: do they exist?

A couple years ago I threw away all of my socks and bought 20 pairs of Hanes cotton crews in black. They are coming to the end of their lifespan and I'm ready for an upgrade: recommend me everyday wear socks (with some stipulations).

I want to buy several pairs of identical black socks as an upgrade from my Hanes collection. I like the Hanes because they are thick, soft, warm cotton that are very comfortable for everyday wear with tennis shoes. I'd like to buy some nicer socks this time that will really last.

What I see recommended everywhere is merino wool/smartwool. Wool makes me itch even as a small percentage of the fabric, so that's out. I also can't wear anything like silk dress socks because my feet sweat a lot. I wear Feetures for running (they are a polyester/nylon blend), but that feels like overkill for an everyday sock. Ideally the socks would hit mid-ankle or above, but do not have to be full crews. Budget would be $15 max per pair, ideally less than that.

I am a woman with wide, flat feet (ladies 9.5 / men's 7.5) and I generally buy men's socks because I think they are higher quality, but I'd be open to women's socks as well. I was just going to go out and buy some Gold Toe because I figure my grandpa has good taste in socks, but then I thought, why not query Metafilter?

The answer to any sock question is "Darn Tough Socks."

On sale I think you can get them for around $15.00 a pair. Mine are about three years old now and they show no signs of wear. They also have a lifetime guaranty.

Darn Tough Socks.

I'm a big fan of these REI/Wigwam socks. Super comfy and they last for years. (My store also has shorter ones; not sure why they are not online.)

Seconding Darn Tough. They come in a variety of weights and heights. Many of them are Merino, but their "Coolmax" material (appropriate given feet sweats?) looks to be totally synthetic.

Thirding Darn Tough Socks- the coolmax ones don't have wool. You might have to go with the men's socks as I think most of the women's ones have colours+/patterns happening. Pricing is a little variable in the $15 range, sometimes different places including Amazon will have them on sale in certain colourways/sizes so worth checking.

Duluth Trading Men's 7-Year Performance Lightweight Crew Socks My husband swears by them and will not wear anything else. They have different lengths, and there is usually a sale or discount available.

World's Softest Socks (acrylic) are thick, comfy, and really really soft. Last time I bought a dozen of them, they easily lasted 6 years.

Response by poster: For comparison's sake I bought a package of Hanes Cool-Dri ankle socks, which are a nicer version of the Hanes I wear now, a package of Gold Toe women's, and two pairs of Wigwam socks as recommended by ktkt as I found them in the Menards. The Gold Toe women's were too tight in the ankle and I had to give them to my girlfriend. The Wigwams aren't bad, but for $10/pair, they don't feel much different from the Hanes, which was a little disappointing. I am going to try some more of these suggestions in the future, thanks for all of the recommendations!
