what is this short story and where is it from

My sister insists that I recommended a book of short stories that contains one about an old man who goes into a wood to commit suicide or die from exposure and he sees a boy fall into a lake or through some ice into a lake. He saves the boy and his own life is revitalized. I have no recollection of this story although anyone might find the elements familiar. Who knows what it is?
