vertical bike storage via pulley?

Yes. I think I want to store my single hybrid bike vertically via the front wheel by pulley, to a high ceiling.

Previous ask q on this returned 'use hook' here , which is fine, but - the place I want to store my bike has a very high ceiling, I am weak and also a lot shorter than where I want to get the bike up to.

I'm thinking of rigging something in the ceiling such that I can attach a big carabiner to the front wheel, then pulley the bike up by the front wheel so it is hanging from said high ceilng, maybe tie the rope off to a wall hook on the side at that point.

While I can surely just d.i.y the thing, I was wondering if any mefiters have done something like this before, specifically, and what they used to make it extra tidy. : )

Thanks!

I did a DIY pulley for a canoe and it was a) more expensive than I thought and b) harder than I thought.

When it came time to hang my kayaks I just bought an inexpensive, off-the-shelf pulley system for it. It was cheaper and much easier than the DIY.

It will work for a bike as well. Here's just one example.

Not sure how well it would work to do this by the single wheel, but there are bike pulley storage systems out there.

I use that one, and it holds a regular bike just fine. I did, however bend the 'front' hooks into a bit more aggressive J shape to really secure the front handlebars to it.

I use a bike pulley storage system similar to the ones bondcliff and furnace.heart linked to store my CNC router mill near my workshop ceiling. With the bulkiness and weight of the router mill it's a little tricky to raise up (pulls one way then the other), but with a bicycle it should be fine. Especially if you only hang it by one point.

n-thing the "just buy one of those solutions". My first solution had a bunch of hardware store
pulleys, and sucked. It'd be better with really nice pulleys from a marine supply store, but those'd cost a ton.

The ones like those linked above are a good compromise.

I also have one of the above-linked pulley systems. Obviously this is intended to hold the bike horizontally, at the seat and handlebar.

The one tip I would offer for setting it up is to install both pieces on a plank, and then mount the plank on the ceiling. It's a lot easier to keep everything straight that way, and you only need to make two holes in your ceiling.

Another advantage of doing this is it gives you a little more leeway in terms of placement, while still letting you screw into joists.
