Looking for a cute, smallish hotel in Portsmouth, NH for a wedding anniversary getaway. Somewhat last minute.

So I realize it's a bit last minute, but my husband's and my 1 year wedding anniversary is coming up on May 7. We'd like to take a trip up to Portsmouth, NH from May 12-16. We've never been there before but have heard great things. We're looking for a small, B&B or boutique-type hotel to stay in, hopefully for under $1000 for the full trip (we'd obviously pay for food, etc. separately). Any suggestions? Also open to ideas on things to do and places to go!

Hotel Portsmouth! Adorable and within walking distance of fun stuff! A ton of delightful restaurants within walking distance. Nice bars. You can park and not drive again while you're there. (I've taken my husband twice--we really like it; it covers all of our sweet spots from microbrews to oysters to fancypants to pizza to mindless wandering around.)

My one caveat: there's a room in the basement they term the garden room--pick a different room.

The same company as Hotel Portsmouth also operates the Ale House Inn - also a terrific location, and a bit more modern (as opposed to retro-chic) style.

There's quite a hotel room shortage in Portsmouth. These are the only two boutique-style inns. If neither has availability (and high season seems to be all the time these days), you could look at some more traditional but still nice B&Bs. The Martin Hill Inn is nice.
