hope me name this spooky 80's film

A Facebook friend saw the advert for a spooky film in the 80's, but she was young then and her parents refused to let her see it because it might scare her. Since it's never too late to have a happy childhood, can you help me identify it for her now?
The film was getting shown around the mid-80's, but possibly it was an earlier film just getting around to being shown on TV. Since my friend was 7 at the time it wasn't considered suitable viewing for her. Basically the plot is that a couple have been wrongly sent to hell. There is a young boy there, I think unrelated to them, and he tries to help them navigate hell and show them the way out. Later it emerges that some sort of evil male sorcerer or gamesmaster is the reason they were wrongly sent to hell.
Ring any bell? Any suggestions welcome from the hive mind :)

Response by poster: I've not seen Beetlejuice, but that seems more set in a house than in hell. You are right though, childhood memories can be quite hazy!

I thought of Beetlejuice too, plus it was more likely a seven-year old would have seen that trailer than for an actual horror film.

I saw Beetlejuice at a friend's house when I was way too little to know what was happening, and that's kind of the gist I got from it, too until I watched it again when I was older.
Here's a trailer for it that I think could easily get remapped as the story your friend remembers--maybe it'll jog their memory?

This film is from the early 90's but I sincerely hope the movie your friend is looking for is Highway To Hell, a.k.a. Hellcop, because that film is a hoot.

Nah, they go to hell quite a lot in Beetlejuice. There's a handbook. And a waiting room.
Maybe it's not technically hell but it's certainly not heaven.

The Watcher in the Woods was on cable in the mid 80s, and is about a girl who gets trapped in a ghost like state and is later released by The Watcher, a spooky alien.
