Finding cheap after-market replacement burner knobs for gas range

I have a circa 1987 GE gas range with four burners and three broken burner knobs. I found replacement knobs here, but I'm balking at having to pay $25/knob. I bought a 4-pack of after market replacement knobs from Home Despot, but they would not fit. Anyone have any experience finding cheap-o knob knockoffs? I've been googling so long my eyes are googley.

They would not fit, as in the hole is too small? Can you measure and describe the shafts the knobs must fit? I've misplaced my GE blueprints.

Response by poster: Kirth-- the replacements I got from Home Despot had a metal sleeve that was the right size but too shallow. If you look at the link I provided in the post, you can see how far the post sticks out past the dial. I haven't been able to find a replacement part that has a deep post like that.

shepd--thanks...Radio Shack. Should have thought of that...

You may also call around to the used appliance shops in your area. They are a godsend for just such things. I'm presuming you don't like on an remote island.

The bases of the knobs on my range (Kenmore) sit about one half inch from the panel and they are stock. Are yours much further than that and is that a problem?

caddis, it sounds like he has the opposite problem - the shafts on the stove are recessed into its front. Used appiance places sound like a good bet.

Response by poster: I still need to check them out, but I think maybe the Despot has what I need...I just needed to look in a different section of the store. These look like they'd do the trick in that they have a long shaft. If they have the same "D" style post, I'm in business. I think the D shape is pretty standard, so methinks I finally found a solution. $5 for 3! They may look ridiculous, but that sure beats $75 for 3...
