Looking for lost japanese recipe

Years back my ex-husbands friend came from Japan (where he had been staying for years) and brought back seitan(? tvp?) balls and gave us a delicious recipe to make them with. I recently found the balls at my local asian market and want to make them again.

From what I recall, the recipe was basically a broth that you boiled the balls in for a while and then rolled them in flour and fried them? (baked? I don't actually remember the second part). Only thing that I can remember from the broth (which was the yummy part, it basically marinaded the balls) was that it had mirin in it. Maybe soy sauce?

Anyone have any ideas? I would ask my ex, but ...

You're talking about fu (麩). Here's a good place to start when considering how to incorporate it into your cooking.
