Knitted sweater pattern: why can't I find you?

SweaterFilter: I am searching for a specific pattern for a knitted sweater similar to this.

I see these types of sweaters around and I'm sure patterns for them exist. Unfortunately, I've had a hard time finding one. My goal is to get the basic pattern and change it slightly to customize the images on it (although I kinda like the squirrel motif). I'm not looking to buy the sweater but rather to make it on my own (and one for a friend).

I have the impression that these were extremely popular in the 60's and have memories of seeing many different patterns (such as deer, moose, ducks, eagles, etc) on the same style of sweater. If not a pattern then just the name of this style of sweater so I can ask the staff at my local knitting shop for more info?

For the basic pattern (a raglan sleeved cardigan) I would recommend Ann Budd's The Handy Book of Sweater Patterns. I used her book to do the exact same style (with buttons instead of a zipper) for my niece. She offers the pattern in many sizes and gauges.

For the design, it looks easy enough to transfer it to knitting graph paper...

Best answer: I can't get your link to work but from the description it sounds to me like one of the old Mary Maxim picture sweaters, like this one, which I remember seeing sold as kits through their catalog, and which may or may not have been related to the Cowichan sweater. Good luck on your search!

Random thought: If the people at the shop will be able to help you if you know the name of the style of sweater, they can probably also help you if you bring in a print-out of the picture.

Response by poster: Mary Maxim!! That's definitely the type of sweater I was thinking of. I'm gonna check out that book too!
Thanks AskMe!
