Help me kill some time in Harlem

So I scored tickets to the Conan O'Brien show when he comes back to New York next month. The venue is the Apollo Theater. I need to get there early to pick up my tickets but instead of going back home and then returning for the show which is in the early evening, I'd like to spend a day in Harlem. I've already got the Studio Museum on my itinerary but I need some more ideas for places where I can kill some time. Also a good coffee shop would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lunch at Sylvia's restaurant! The food is great. Never been for lunch but it's always a long wait for dinner, so it could be a great way to kill time.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of good tips on Harlem, but if you haven't been yet, an alternative might be checking out Arthur Ave. It's one of those places you have to be rather determined to go to, but given that you'll be in the (relative) area and have a day to kill, it might be the perfect opportunity. You can take the Metro North from Harlem-125th to Fordham (10 min. ride).

And yes, there might be a cafe or two...

Red Rooster and the newly-renovated Schomburg would be my top choices.

+1 for Red Rooster.

Two excellent coffee shops a few blocks south of 125th Street are Cafeine (Frederick Douglass between 115th and 114th) and Double Dutch Espresso (Frederick Douglass between 118th and 119th). For after-dinner dessert, there's Make My Cake on 116th and St Nicholas.

If you're a fan of the new show Luke Cage, you can take a look around some locations where they filmed, or which inspired some fictional settings in the show.

Red Rooster, definitely.

Cafe Latte on Lenox (Malcolm X) between 119th and 120th makes a good place for a coffee or a sandwich.

If you need a place to just go and read or something the Harlem branch of the public library on 124th just off Lenox is always an option.

There might be something interesting screening at the Maysles Documentary Center.

There's a lot of architecture in that neighborhood that is of historical interest so it's a good place for a walking tour, either by podcast or book.

Morningside park (123rd to 110th street) has a lovely waterfall with geese and turtles. It's an interesting park built into a cliff. Marcus Garvey park (124th to 118th and fifth ave) often has colorful people watching and musicians.

I also recommend Strivers Row for historic townhouses and cobblestone streets.
