Online games for a 10-year-old to play with his pal who lives overseas?

My 10-year-old son's friend moved to Spain permanently. We're looking for some online games that they could play together.

Play can be simultaneous but I guess it would be more workable with the time difference (we're in the Eastern US so 6 hours apart) if they could play at different times.

Nothing where they're really pushing the purchases, please! Really, in general, the more it feels like a board/card game, the better. Chess.com is one example of what we think they'd like (and we'd like).

Apps or websites are fine -- he has access to an old iPhone 4 that he can use for apps.

If they enjoy scrabble-type games, Words With Friends is a decent turn-based scrabble app game.

The Civilization game series has a turn-based option.

Draw something is a game that they can play without having to make sure they are both available at the same time.

For other types we play minecraft, terraria, and starve together. If you get steam it is very easy to join with a friend on multi-player.

Minecraft would be fun.. I played a shared world with a friend when we had very different schedules and could almost never play at the same time, but I'd come online and find/see all the things he'd built, and he'd left me little surprises, and I'd do the same for him. It was great!

Board game arena! Free, with turn based options, and the games there are supported by the creators. The interface is not the best but it is 100% board and card game based and generally civil.

Another vote for Minecraft here. Realms is a solid option actually operated by Mojang and you can control who is allowed onto the server. I'm 41 years old and I am still delighted when I log in to find that my friend has installed a new pumpkin farm or built a villager trading system.

I'll add Yucata and second Board Game Arena for turn-based board games. Great selections across the two!
