I want to learn how to fix stuff in Seattle

I've decided I want to make better, more purposeful use of my downtime to get myself out of a rut. I'd like to take some ongoing (not one-off) classes in something that is engaging and practically useful. I'm feeling drawn to mechanical-type things, like learning how to do basic electrician stuff or auto repair. Any ideas? North Seattle would be ideal but I can travel.

I have been to several good events at the Northeast Seattle Tool Library. I think they just hired some new people and are expanding many of their classes and programs.

Lake Washington Institute of Technology has a really robust mix of programs if you don't mind travelling a little bit to the northeast. If it were me, I would start with either machining or welding, but they also have horticulutre, electronics, and a lot more.

Home Depot often has classes on how to do things. No big deal, but I'm a kind of an expert after graduating from Home Depot Basement College.

I came here to tell you about the tool libraries but someone beat me to it. Pick up a broken lamp/radio/espresso machine from your local thrift store and drop in on their fixit night; taking things apart is the first step in learning how to fix them, and there's nothing to lose if you can't get it working. If you want to dive into electrical/wiring then the "Black & Decker The Complete Guide to Wiring" is a great place to start; the Seattle Public Library has several copies of the current edition.
