Best resources for learning more about machine learning

Looking for recommendations on reads on machine learning.
Hi all, I'm a novice who is interested in learning more about machine learning. Not as interested in the doomsday / political stuff of artificial intelligence, but more the mechanics of machine learning and how it works -- and it's applications, and future.
Assume limited computer science background. I prefer bite sized pieces instead of books, but open to all.
If you have experience in the field, also keen to hear if you have particular subtopics that you recommend I begin with. Deep learning seems to be one promising one that is particularly relevant to a lot of businesses.

There is also a well recommended course at Coursera, but that might break the "limited computer science background" rule.
